New Zealand offers a winter wonderland you can only dream about. Spectacular snowy peaks rise out of icy blue lakes. Vast areas of untouched terrain lay in wait. Be warned, those who stop to catch their breath risk filling their heads with unsurpassed scenery. New Zealand is the ultimate winter destination and using one of our four season campervans as your base while you experience the great winter activities is a novel way to do it. Whether you’re hooked on the adrenaline rush of diving head first off tall bridges or the peaceful and often surreal sight of humpback whales surfacing only meters from you, then this is one playground you are not going to want to leave.
Welcome to our slopes. New Zealand has a stunning and diverse range of snowfields offering skiing and boarding experiences for everyone. In the North Island, there are two commercial ski fields on Mount Ruapehu (Turoa and Whakapapa), an active volcanic cone.
In the south, the Southern Alps offer a large choice of ski fields with spectacular alpine scenery and lively resort towns for fun at the end of the day. The Remarkables, Treble Cone and Coronet Peak fields are centred on the resort towns of Queenstown and Wanaka. There’s also a Nordic skiing area near Wanaka, with 25 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails. The ski and snowboard season generally lasts from early June through to early October. The Mount Hutt field in Canterbury has the longest ski season in the country.
Choosing a Suitable Campervan Hire
A winterised campervan from Wilderness is the perfect vehicle for exploring New Zealand's winter wonderland. The fully winterised campervans in our fleet will satisfy the most adventurous and demanding winter traveller. On the snow covered and icy roads, you’ll need a campervan that is front wheel drive, has excellent traction, a superb ABS braking system and a low centre of gravity. You'll also need a insulated vehicle plus thermostatically controlled central heater that doesn't need mains power to operate. Our motorhomes are perfect for your winter trip. And what’s more, you can hire snow chains when you pick up your motorhome so you’ll be stress free if you find yourself on a snow covered road.
