Cook Strait Ferry

Named after the famous explorer Captain James Cook, the Cook Strait, the channel of water between the North and South Islands, is a stunning ocean passage between Picton and downtown Wellington. Often quoted as being “one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world”, Cook Strait ferry crossing is one of the many highlights of a New Zealand road trip.

If you plan to visit both the North and South Islands, you’ll be pleased to know that unlike many car rental companies, we allow you to take your campervan across the Cook Strait ferry. This means you can stay in the same campervan for your entire trip.

Regular car and passenger Cook Strait ferry services operate between Wellington and Picton. Wilderness is an agent for both ferry companies so we can book Cook Strait ferry tickets on your behalf. You can select ferry tickets on the Interislander Ferry when you book your rental campervan or when completing your online booking. Please inquire with us directly regarding the Bluebridge Ferries tickets. We do not charge any booking or administration fee.
