No matter what the time of year you plan to travel to New Zealand, the weather will inevitably impact on your plans. You can expect relatively settled weather between December and March - our summer. From April through to November, rainy days are more common and from July through to September, temperatures are lower and snow and ice can be expected at higher altitudes from the middle of the North Island through to the lower South Island.
It's a good idea to keep an eye on the local weather forecast when you are making plans about your route and activities. The dramatic landscapes in some parts may be lost behind clouds and rain at times so an alternative route may be necessary. Weather reports are available on most local radio stations. Our two favourite weather websites : Metservice and MetVUW, contain detailed forecasts including rain radar and satellite imagery as well as marine and mountain forecasts.
